GENERAL – (10 ECTS) - COMPULSORY TO TAKE BOTH COURSES

G1 - Improve your languages (5 ECTS)

:  In an effort to better integrate international students, ENSAIT offers (and strongly recommends) French as a Foreign Language courses to all its non-French speaking students. French as a Foreign Language courses are offered at several levels.

  • Degree programs

ENSAIT’s degree courses are taught in French, so students enrolled in one of these courses must demonstrate a minimum level of B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at the beginning of their degree program. This level optimizes the chances of success of their engineering curriculum and enables them to fulfil the language requirements of the Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur (CTI). In addition to this prerequisite level, international students follow FLE courses at ENSAIT throughout their studies. Particular attention is paid to written and oral production.

They are therefore expected to progress from the beginner to the advanced independent user level, they must be able to:

– Characterize, comment, give their opinion, express nuances, interact, reformulate, structure their speech, express thoughts and feelings in an objective and subjective way

  • Non-degree programs

For non-degree courses (exchange semesters or years, laboratory projects, etc.) where non-linguistic subjects are taught in English, the objectives of French as a foreign Language courses are more practical and cultural. Learners are introduced to the basics of the language for everyday life – or in more depth, depending on their starting level – and the customs/particularities of life in France are presented to them. Students should be able to:

– Introduce themselves and someone else, approach someone, describe a person or a situation, tell and ask for the time, make an acquaintance, make a purchase, congratulate/thank you, make an appointment, situate in space and time, use of politeness formulas.

 

  • Summer courses

For students who have not yet fully reached the B2 level at the time of enrolment at ENSAIT (before the summer), ENSAIT encourages students to enrol in the summer courses offered by the International Academy International Academy | The Summer University for International Students in Hauts-de-France (international-academy.fr)

ENSAIT may cover the cost of these summer courses at the International Academy if the application is of a merit nature.  Applications can be made to the International Relations Department.

  • Give to the students the main keys in order to be able to communicate with foreign partners : clients, suppliers, investors, employees, colleagues, etc.

Global Case Study as a recap of the various notions

The course aims to give some cultural keys concerning the culture (way of life, society, gastronomy, politics, religion…), main historical events, major artistic tendencies, thoughts, fundamental symbols (concrete or abstract) representing French memory. The goal is to give some keys to help the students understand the current French society and integrate better.

  • We will first start with stereotypes to then mainly focus on heritage, culture and some important dates and facts and see how they continue in many different ways influencing the contemporary reality. Students will have the opportunity to get out of the classroom for:
  • A visit of the Old Lille and its main historical places
  • An apprentice chef’s experience on French cuisine (no prerequisite skills needed).
  • A French buffet tasting cooked by the French students of ENSAIT
  • Cooking and tasting an international buffet to discover flavors from all over the world, and share the savors of your country
  • The discovery of French culture by being accompanied by a member of the ENSAIT community.

PROJECT - (5/7.5/10/12.5/15 ECTS) - COMPULSORY

TECHNICAL TEXTILES FROM DISCOVERY TO INNOVATION - (0 Or 5 ECTS) -
ONLY ONE OF THE TWO

T1 -Discovery of technical textiles in fashion (5 ECTS)

To define and characterize the textile structures implemented in spinning from fibers to yarn and its derivatives
Master the technical vocabulary on the basic principles of textile engineering of spinning
To know the technological flow of the ring spinning transformation of fibers to yarn and its derivatives
Master the main physical quantities characterizing the linear textile structures in spinning (linear mass: count, number of fibers in cross-section, strength/elongation, tenacity…).
Evaluate the manufacturing cost and its duration for a yarn (Spinning frame production)
Apply the notions seen in class to fancy yarns (Practical work)

Weaving is a textile technology consisting of interlacing two groups of yarns to make a fabric. The architecture of the fabric impacts its appearance and touch. The principles of the weaving technique and architecture construction process will be discovered as well as the basic weave pattern for a simple fabric and double face fabric. The 3h of lectures are assisted by 9h of practical work dedicated to the architecture analysis, design and realization by means a textile computer assisted design software (Pointcarré) and automated weaving loom.

The teaching module makes it possible to situate the knit in the textile sector.

The two main families, namely the weft knitting and the warp knitting, are briefly presented in terms of properties, implementation, productivity, etc. The fields of application of each family are illustrated by examples. The flagship machines and manufacturers of each family are associated with each other.

The rest of the module discusses the different elements of the machines by explaining their operation and their impact on the production and/or quality of the products produced.

The basic structures in picked mesh are presented, characterized and a decomposition methodology to find the binding is given.

The last part of the course is dedicated to the general points of the warp knitting ; Examples of products that can be produced on warp knit machines (clothing: underwear, lace, sports sectors, etc. / home textile / technical: transport, medical, geotextile, fishing net, etc.); Classification of machinery; The elements of the various warp stitch machines; Formation of the stitch on the Rachel and Tricot machine; Names and stitch diagrams of the usual bindings on warp knit machines.

 

Basic lessons on textile scouring, dyeing, finishing and printing.

Various methods, chemical agents and technologies as well as testing methods: practical and theoritical aspects.

The objectives of this course are to give some basic knowledge of textile metrology to the students. It is designed for beginner in the field. First observations of the fibers by microscope are done. Also fabrics are mechanically tested. 

T2 -Advanced functionalization (2.5 ECTS)

This course on « Advanced Functionalisation » focuses on various advanced sustainable and innovative technologies for functionalizing textiles to produce innovative materials.

Innovative and sustainable ecotechnologies include Supercritical CO2, Microwave, Biotechnologies, Plasma, Microencapsulation and Sol-gel process.

End-Applications concerns: Medical textiles, textiles for comfort, fire-proofing and electrical uses.

Fire retardancy for textile materials (Teaching Unit : « Advanced nonwovens & Functionalization » – Part of the course : « Functionalization and properties ») : Explanation of the mechanism of combustion and the principles of fireproofing for materials; Presentation of the standards related to behavior in fire; Strategies for obtaining fire retardant textiles. Main objective: To know the fire behavior of materials; Know the existing tools to characterize the heat and flame behavior of materials; Being able to propose solutions for improving the fire behavior of a material according to the specifications.

Textile and fashion innovation

The Fashion Manufacturing and Online Retail Business: Recommerce & Textile Sustainability

Today, technology and fashion come together to bring us Smart Textiles which are intelligent systems that can observe or communicate ambient circumstances and detect and process the wearer’s state. They use electrical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, magnetic, and other inputs and outputs. Smart Textiles could be the next phase of wearable electronics, sometimes labeled as wearable computers.  This course will provide some basic knowledge of what Smart Textiles are, and why they are vital for our future. In addition, the applications of Smart Textiles in the Fashion industry will be discussed.

International collection management

This course is designed to equip students with to understand real-time product tracking systems in the whole supply chain of the Textile/ Apparel sector and practical learning knowledge of fashion collection management and tracking methods by using different commercial software.

SCIENCE AND DESIGN FO TEXTILE (0/1.5/2.5/5 ECTS) – YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE 0, 1 OR 2 COURSES ONLY OF THE 4

S1 - Customization and virtual reality (2.5 ECTS)

The development of the virtual store (e-shop website) containing virtual clothes and accessories (dresses, hats, swimsuits, trousers, skirts) or other textile objects (sofas, seats, curtains …) in 3D with the possibility of co-design and personalization.
Brief description of the work to be carried out:
– Realize the state of the art of e-shops with 3D textile objects and the possibility of co-design and realizing their SWOT analysis.
– Develop a virtual collection of clothing (swimwear, dresses, trousers…) or other textile-oriented objects in 3D;
– Develop an E-Shop website (Front Office) using HTML coding and WYSWYG (what you see is what you get) software;
– Integrate the 3D objects in the website.
– Presentation of the projects realized.

 

The website will be hosted on the ENSAIT HTTP server and visible on all the platforms worldwide for a limited time period.

In the lecture of Advanced Mass Customization, students will learn about the complete process from body scan to 3D virtual try-on. The software of Modaris 3D is used to help students to realize the virtual try-on process. Students will modify the basic patterns to personalized the garment according to their anthropometric measurements. Finally, students will use the table-cut machine to realize the real pattern by choosing a fabric and make a real garment by sewing machine.

S2 - Smart textile e-learning (2.5 ECTS)

First Part.
Validation by a MCQ of the course about “Smart textile” (Basic definitions; Sensors for smart textiles; Reliability & washability standards; Actuators for smart textile; Textile electronic circuits; Microcontroller modules for smart textiles) included in the MOOC “Advanced technologies for textile and fashion industry” (composed of 5 others optional courses: New Textile structures and technologies; Nanomaterials ; Digital fashion design; Sustainability in design and production; Logistics and Distribution).

Second Part.
Bibliographic work on a “smart textile” subject completed by an oral defence. The work is achieved in groups and supervised by the teacher.

S3 - Design of nonwovens (2.5 ECTS)

This course module is dedicated to the creative design and development of textile products based on nonwoven materials that will also be developed to meet the desired functionalities. This module has a strong emphasis on collaboration between designers and material scientists. It is an opportunity to discover the interest of nonwoven materials for fashion and technical design and you do not need to be a nonwoven expert.
You will be inserted into a small project group (3-4 students) and will participate in all stages of design and development of an innovative product up to the prototyping phase and the production of a demonstrator. You will investigate all design stages: analysis of the market need, functional analysis, analysis of existing products, technical definition of the product and the implementation processes, finishing, making a proof of concept or a product prototype, characterization… This project will be concluded by an oral presentation of the work carried out.

S4 - Technical groundwork for 3D design projects (1.5 ECTS)

This course is designed to prepare students not only to comprehend the 3D design process for clothing development but also to work on various fundamentals within the 3D environment. Through the utilization of DesignConcept software (Lectra), students can actively participate in the development of lines, contours, angular dimensions, simple to complex shapes essential in pattern construction. Additionally, they will learn to transform 3D scans into personalized products.
